Before you communicate your preferences to your logo designer you should first understand what makes a logo a classic or a dud.
The following article sets out some important points to consider.
Is it Relevant?
A winning corporate logo design should be appropriate to what the company does. Being abstract is fine but clearly identifying the industry that the company is in and the services that it provides also has many benefits.
Keep it Simple
Keep it clean, keep it simple. Being clever or funny with your logo design can result in a logo that really grabs people's attention. But if you get carried away you risk ending up with a logo that viewers fail to understand, and ignore due to a lack of clarity.
Appealing and Memorable
A great custom logo design should catch the eye of its viewers immediately and demand their attention. It should be so distinct that the second time viewers see it they recognize it as being a logo that they have seen before.
Unique
Feel free to gain inspiration from the logos of companies in other industries but don't try to imitate your competitor's logos. Your logo should look like 'one of a kind' although it does not have to be totally original and can incorporate aspects of other logos that work well.
Is your Logo Functional and Flexible?
A logo should serve its purpose. If it cannot be incorporated into all of your company's stationery, marketing materials and other requirements then it is not entirely useful.
Scalable
Can your logo be changed in size to meet your company's needs and still look good? To consider all the sizes that you might need consider the logo as a small print on a pen or a huge image on a billboard.
The Principals of Good Design
A great logo is a sum of its parts. The various design aspects of a logo, such as color, shape and space have to work together as a whole in a way that they compliment each other and form a kind of synergy.
If you think of some of the classic logo designs that have helped their companies become household brands then you are on the right track. Logo designers should follow these basic rules while remembering that every company is different and these are guidelines only.
